About UCLA Institute of the Environment & Sustainability: UCLA’s primary purpose as a public research university is the creation, dissemination, preservation and application of knowledge for the betterment of our global society. The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability moves science to action on the front lines of environmental progress. Using Los Angeles and California as a testbed, IoES promises solutions for the broader world—and our commitment to communications makes sure our ideas are heard.

We thrive on the energy, optimism and impatience of its students and faculty. We envision a future that is beautiful and prosperous in 2050—air, water, food, people and nature. As humanity urbanizes, the story of how we save the planet will be written by cities like Los Angeles, by multicultural universities like UCLA, and by innovators who break down silos of disciplinary scholarship. IoES aspires to be a big part of that story.

IoES has pioneered a unique, hands-on approach to environmental research and practice. Our Senior Practicum takes students off campus and pairs them with clients to solve real-world problems using the science, statistics and communications skills they’ve learned. A similar approach is taken at the graduate level.

Our Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering program immerses students in two years of rigorous coursework, then matches them with businesses and government agencies to fuse their thesis research with real work.

With our eight research centers and partnerships throughout the UCLA network, we achieve national and global reach. IoES works hand in hand with groups across campus, such as the Emmett Institute on Climate Change, the Luskin Center for Public Policy and the Graduate School of Education. These cooperative efforts allow us to focus teams of diverse talents on today’s most urgent problems.

Today’s environmental challenges are too big to leave any idea unexplored. They are too pressing to exclude provocative or even unpopular ideas. For these reasons, IoES sponsors events that stimulate public dialogue on topics including nuclear energy, genetically modified organisms and the future of cars and transportation.

There was a time when environmental scientists and leaders had to alert the public to threats and risks. Now is not that time. We know the problems—it’s time for solutions.

Kanin Named on the 2023 Cleantech 50 to Watch

Kanin has been named on Cleantech Group’s 2023 Cleantech 50 to Watch. The Cleantech 50 to Watch is an annual list of top global early-stage private companies showcased for their excellence in sustainable innovation.

The entrepreneurs on the list are creating new technologies that are poised to address the climate crisis from soil monitoring to solar to water scarcity and everything in-between. Kanin’s team was recognized for their contributions to industrial decarbonization by enabling heavy industry to decarbonize their operations and achieve cost savings through waste heat to power solutions.

To create the list, inputs are combined from the Cleantech 50 to Watch expert panel of 32 leading investors, corporate and industrial executives who are active in technology and innovation scouting.

The panel nominated the companies that most impressed them with their early-stage high-impact solutions. These were combined with Cleantech Group research on public early-stage awards who then put the companies through qualitative and impact filters. A shortlist of 150 companies was reviewed and scored by the expert panel to reach the final 50.

The Cleantech 50 to Watch companies are located in 21 countries. These innovators are delivering sustainable solutions in these five industry groups:

  • Agriculture & Food
  • Energy & Power
  • Materials & Chemicals
  • Resources & Environment
  • Transportation & Logistics

“The companies in this year’s Cleantech 50 to Watch are younger, faster, and gutsier,” said Richard Youngman, CEO, Cleantech Group. “This year’s list is a testament to the dynamics that we are seeing slowly crescendo in the overall cleantech innovation universe, and indeed the same ones that will be necessary to tackle the most pressing climate challenges.”

In its fifth year, this highly anticipated annual report brings you the complete list of leading companies with case studies on a subset of the group. To download the Cleantech 50 to Watch complimentary report, click here

Nations strive to transit their economy from carbon-intensive to low-carbon in terms of adaption and transition by reducing or capturing greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions. As a pioneer in a low carbon economy, Canada has implemented carbon tax system and established huge fund support for low carbon technology development and marketing. As carbon capture, utilization and storage becomes more prevalent, some advocates question whether it amounts to another way to prop up the oil and gas industry. Others argue it’s the only way forward to a net-zero future. Carbon Capture Canada Conference aims to facilitate this discussion.

Kanin on Panel to Discuss Women Entrepreneurs and Clean Energy Infrastructure

“Last year, the U.S. Congress passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that included $7.5 billion for electric vehicle charging, $65 billion to upgrade the electricity grid, and $8 billion to establish 4 hydrogen hubs, among other expenditures in clean energy. The U.S. Department of Energy Loan program office is targeting multiple infrastructure and technologies, including battery storage, DERs, advanced vehicle manufacturing and carbon capture and storage.

The new round of public funding comes against the backdrop of attention on social and environmental goals. The Biden administration stated aims to commit 40 percent of new clean energy funds to disadvantaged communities. Historically, women-run firms have been underrepresented in major infrastructure development projects receiving U.S. federal government support, such as the Loan Guarantee programs. For example, between 2009 and 2020, the chief executive officers of ventures that received over $1 billion allocations from the loan guarantee program were all male-run. Women are also underrepresented in grants from the DOE’s Small Business Innovation Research program (SBIR).

The Center on Global Energy Policy will host a panel of women clean energy CEOs to discuss the potential of the infrastructure bill and other Biden administration policies to fast-track clean energy infrastructure in the United States and the role of women-led firms in accelerating the energy transition.”

About Columbia CGEP: The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA advances smart, actionable and evidence-based energy and climate solutions through research, education and dialogue.
