The Role: Director of Origination

Kanin Energy is searching for a Director of Origination to support growth in the company’s clean energy and decarbonization platform. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the ideal candidate will be a highly motivated experienced professional that has led the development of energy related projects and has completed transactions. Further the candidate has quantitative experience, demonstrates intellectual curiosity and has leadership experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Identification & Development
    • Identify and evaluate opportunities for waste heat to power projects, working closely with industrial partners and conducting feasibility assessments.
    • Apply comprehensive market knowledge of power and environmental markets to assess and select appropriate project
    • Stay abreast of regulatory requirements related to waste heat to power projects, ensuring compliance throughout the development process and identifying new market opportunities, including, State/Provincial and Federal
    • Working with electric power utilities for interconnections and offtake opportunities. 
  • Partnership Development: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with industrial clients, utilities, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and project development.
  • Financial Assessments: Develop and analyze financial models to evaluate the economic feasibility of waste heat to power projects, considering factors such as power and environmental attributes pricing, financing, incentives, capex and operational costs.
  • Deal Structuring and Contract Negotiation: Lead negotiations for key agreements such as, Term Sheets, Memorandum of Understanding, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Waste Heat Agreements, and other contracts necessary for the successful implementation of waste heat to power projects.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with waste heat to power projects, coordinating with legal, environmental, and engineering teams as needed.
  • Team Leadership: As a senior member of the Kanin team, work within a cross-functional team, providing clear direction, guidance, support, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of project origination activities, progress reports, and key metrics for internal and external reporting.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in relevant field
  • 8-10 years of experience in a similar role in energy or adjacent industry
  • Entrepreneurial and self-starter attitude with interest in working in a start-up environment
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • First-principles mindset 
  • Strong written communication skills in English
  • Highly collaborative with other team members
