The Role: Commercial Analyst
Kanin Energy is searching for a Commercial Analyst to support growth in the company’s clean energy and decarbonization platform. Reporting to the Director of Origination, the ideal candidate will be a highly motivated early career professional that has quantitative experience, intellectual curiosity and an understanding of what it means to create value as a junior team member with the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Market Research:
- Researching and analyzing the intersection of heavy industry trends and decarbonization opportunities
- Researching industry trends to help determine areas of opportunity and further develop our thesis on the market and its competitive landscape
- Creatively approaching industry data to identify new opportunities for both product development and client engagement
- Updating and analyzing wholesale power prices, carbon prices, and other commodities
- Communicating the impact/relevance of customer, government and other market changes/announcements to the Kanin team
- Researching power market structures/policies in regulated and de-regulated markets
- Researching utility service territories and tariffs
- Using S&P Capital IQ, Industrial Info Resources and other 3rd party databases and/or public data to produce insights on prospective and active customer facilities and taking initiative with this data to identify prospect sites and target areas where Kanin would add value
- General research into overall market size across various sectors and regional industrial hubs
Sales Assistance:
- Coordinating discovery calls and setting up in-person meetings
- Updating Hubspot/CRM database and delivering regular reports to leadership
- Building custom Hubspot outputs to help the team better understand and visualize sales data
- Leveraging industry contacts and developing an appropriate network as you participate in the market as a Kanin team member
Commercial Analysis:
- Assembling and updating project level financial models in Excel
- Building sensitivity/data tables, waterfall charts, tornado charts and other quantitative outputs using Excel
- Assembling PowerPoint presentations that include quantitative outputs for client meetings
- Building case studies and quantifying financial and environmental project impacts/benefits for customers (cost savings, emissions reductions, etc.)
Qualifications:
- University degree in relevant field
- 2-5 years of professional experience with experience working in power, energy markets, project finance, project development, corporate finance, enterprise sales, or commercial development
- Entrepreneurial and self-starter attitude
- Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
- First-principles mindset
- Strong written communication skills in English
- Highly collaborative with other team members
